Engagement of the private pharmaceutical sector for TB control: rhetoric or reality?

The paper draws upon the efforts made by TB programs with broader implications for antimicrobial resistance and pharmaceutical policy. The paper highlights two key messages:
  • Although private pharmacies are willing and able to contribute to TB control efforts, interventions have not scaled adequately. Coverage ranged from less than 5% to 9% of the universe of private pharmacies, which is unlikely to have broader public health impact (figure 1 in paper)
  • The institutional roles of national medicines regulatory authorities, national pharmacy associations, private pharmacy and wholesaler associations and pharmacy schools need to be better utilized (figure 2 in paper)
