That article is depressing as well as heartening. I'm happy to hear that they will be making the effort to maintain the wells they build. I've actually never thought about that myself, how well they wells are maintained after the projects end. Hopefully more project leaders will take the initiative to set up a maintenance program to keep the wells up and running. I've heard that some do already, even teaching them how local materials could be used as replacement parts when proper parts can't be found. I love reading these articles, they always restore my faith in humanity. Thanks for the read!

In fact, Ketamine is not currently scheduled as a controlled drug under the international drug control treaties. WHO has recently conducted a 'critical review' (required under the Conventions before a substance can become 'controlled), and recommended that scheduling would resrict access to and availability of ketamine in the developing world, where it plays a vital role as an anaesthetic (in an equivalent way to the problems with morphine which you mention above) . At the moment, though the INCB and some member states are pushing for its scheduling, ketamine remains uncontrolled, though various countries have legislated to outlaw it within their own jurisdictions.

Mr Sekidde many thanks for this elaborative article that seems to fully cover the events of the two days at Westminster.
Surely there was enthusiasm and passion that nobody should dare kill in its infancy! The best move!.

I totaly agree with your observation that arrogance and ignorrance that ussauly features in such initiatives, none of these were overtly indicated, a good start. The style and format of the sessions, one at the house of commons that was free and relaxed and the one on the day of the launch signified a new paradigm change in the world of development, which as been dominated by "We know and they dont"; "We have and they dont".

This new paradigm needs to be further natured and clearly elaborated to avoid total "Policy/Knowldge transfer" because there is a lot of know how that is not written but very useful in defining, illness , wellness and formulating solutions".
We live in a new world order of which the direction is not clerly mapped out. The challenge is on the world table, lets sit more on the Afrikan stool with freinds of Afrika to support new intiatives of contributing to the building of Insititutions that created the Nation states at time of independence.

Uganda , Kenyan, Tanzanian etc (Afrikan) profesionals in the diaspora should be encouraged to contribute to this noble cause.
Thanks to all those who developed the idea and all who contributed to the successful launch. Special thanks to the friends of Afrikan people. This is what I cherish as "Obuntu"!!!

"up to 60% reduction" sounds a lot, but these are the facts. In three trials, they circumcised a total of 5,400 men, and left another group to wait. After less than two years, 64 of the circumcised group had HIV, and 137 of the other group. Since there are various differences in the way the groups were treated, we can't be sure that circumcision is the reason for the difference. Several times as many men dropped out of the trials, their HIV status unknown. Since getting HIV after a painful and marking operation to prevent it would be a good reason to drop out, there may be no real difference at all. Another trial started to show that circumcising men could INcrease the HIV risk to women, but they cut that trial short before the finding could be confirmed. In 10 out of 18 countries for which USAID has figures, more of the circumcised men have HIV than the non-circumcised. That needs to be explained before pressing on with mass circumcision.

thankyou.

midwives play a great role in reducing deaths at childbirth and maternal mortality but they are not enough .secondly they require contunious mentorships in care of the new born especially the golden minuite for example helping babies breath skills in the lst one to five minute after birth ,the few available should be given on job training in the newly researced and evidenced safe practices gobally,
recuirt and maintain with a good package , training of new midwives should mandatory ,schoolarships should be graded to midwives sinces some are not able to up grade their skills due to lack of funds.
good working eviroment with available sandries like protectives gears , oxtotcics drugs,
resuscitation equipment ,good and efficent referral system for both obstretrical emergenices and newborn would reduce the burn out of the few midwivews available.
special thanks to all the midwives and may the good lord bless you as you save more mothers and the new born
every pregnancy counts.

I agree. Information is needed to direct response, coordinate efforts, and save lives. The challenge is not only collecting information but in keeping information current and usable. We are working to develop a solution for this and I'd be interested in talking to you about it. On a global level we don't know where or when the next disaster will be. Ideally we will have accurate information everywhere so we will be ready.
